Some products can be classified differently under the HPR and CCCR, 2001. For example, with respect to the flammability hazard, this product is classified under the sub-category “Combustible” under the CCCR, 2001, but under “Flammable Liquids – Category 3” under the HPR.

As such, there are differences in the required information on the consumer chemical product and hazardous product labels. For example, the flammability hazard symbol is not required on the consumer chemical product label, however, the flame pictogram is required on the hazardous product label.

Product Name

For a hazardous product: The product identifier is defined as the brand name, chemical name, common name, generic name or trade name of the hazardous product. The product identifier must be identical to the product identifier on the safety data sheet.

For a consumer chemical product: The product name is not a requirement under the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001. However, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act requires that the product identity appear on the label.

Pictogram or Hazard Symbol

For a hazardous product: based on the hazard classification of the product, the corresponding pictogram. For more information on the pictograms, please consult the WHMIS 2015 - Pictograms fact sheet.

For a consumer chemical product: based on the classification of the product, the corresponding hazard symbol. For more information on the hazard symbols, please consult the Understanding hazard symbols web page.

Signal Word

For a hazardous product: based on the hazard classification of the product, the corresponding signal word.

For a consumer chemical product: based on the classification of the product, the corresponding signal word.

Hazard Statements

For a hazardous product: based on the hazard classification of the product, the corresponding hazard statements.

For a consumer chemical product: based on the classification of the product, the corresponding primary and specific hazard statements.

Precautionary Statements or Instruction and First Aid Statement

For a hazardous product: based on the hazard classification of the product, the corresponding precautionary statements. Hazardous ingredients that are classified in a health hazard category are required to be provided on the safety data sheet for the product, if the ingredient is at or above the concentration limit for classification or if the ingredient results in the product being classified in a health hazard class. The hazardous ingredient must be identified by its chemical name, common name and synonyms, and CAS registry number.

For a consumer chemical product: based on the classification of the product, the corresponding positive and negative instructions and first aid statements. Hazardous ingredients, as defined in the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001, that are present at a concentration of 1% or more must be listed in the first aid statement. The hazardous ingredients must be listed in descending order of proportion. The hazardous ingredient must be identified by its chemical identity, or in the case of a complex mixture, its generic name.

Initial Supplier Identifier

For a hazardous product: The initial supplier identifier is defined as the name, address and telephone number of

(a) the manufacturer; or (b) the importer of the hazardous product who operates in Canada. The initial supplier identifier must be identical to the initial supplier identifier on the safety data sheet.

For a consumer chemical product: The supplier name is not a requirement under the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001. However, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act requires that the identity and principal place of business of the person by or for whom the product was manufactured or produced for resale must appear on the label.

Other Information

For a hazardous product: the pictogram, signal word and hazard statement must be grouped together on the label. The information elements provided on the hazardous product label must be in both English and French. The information elements can appear either on a single bilingual label or the English and French portions of the label can be separated into two parts that constitute one bilingual label.

For a consumer chemical product: There are sizing, placement and contrast requirements for the hazard symbol, signal word and primary hazard statement on the main display panel, and the other required information elsewhere on the display surface. The information required on the main display panel must be displayed in both English and French. Sizing of the hazard symbol and fonts is based on the size of the main display panel. The specific hazard statement, positive and negative instructions, and first aid statement can be on any part of the display surface and must be enclosed within a border. The English and French text may be presented in their own bordered areas.

In case of inadequate ventilation, wear respiratory protection.

IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of water.

IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing.

IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
